Ilish Bhapa Recipe

Ingredients

  1. Hilsa fish – 4-6 pieces
  2. Mustard paste – 3 tbsp
  3. Coconut batter – 2 tbsp
  4. Poppy batter – 1 tbsp
  5. Raw Chillies – 4-5 (finely chopped)
  6. Turmeric powder – 1 tsp
  7. Salt – like quantity
  8. Mustard oil – 3 tbsp
  9. Banana leaves – After marinating the fish, wrap them in banana leaves

Method

  1. First make a paste by mixing mustard, coconut, poppy seeds and green chillies together. Then mix turmeric powder and salt into the paste. Prepare the masala like this.
  2. Rub the hilsa fish pieces well with this spice mixture and marinate the fish.
  3. Then lightly roast the banana leaves on low flame so that the banana leaves become soft and easy to fold.
  4. Wrap each fish piece separately in banana leaf. After wrapping tie it well with thread.
  5. Then steam the fish packets in a steamer or a large pot with little water. You will see that the mouth of the pot is well closed so that steam does not enter inside, if steam enters inside, the fish will not be steamed well.
  6. Fixed steaming time is between 15-20 minutes. Steam on medium heat. After steaming, serve the fish with hot rice.
